1.
Somewhere out west there's a blue moon a-risin'
The sun disappears down below the horizon
A cowboy beds down as the stars gather round
His home for the night is a piece of the ground
Coyotes are howlin' a high lonesome sound
And the night is cold and clear

2.
He's thinkin' back, as he sits by the fire
When the wind in the canyon made a sound like a choir
He broke all the bronco's until there were none
He drove all the cattle 'til the drovin' was done
And all that he'd lost and all that he'd won
And how did he wind-up here

Chorus:
He's the last of the cowboys,
He'll ride to the sunset
Searchin' for new trails to cross
And he goes on believin'
In a life he is leadin'
Ridin' but knowin' he's lost

3.
Sun up will find him in the saddle a-ridin'
Where he will go is left up to decidin'
The trails left to ride are damned far and few
The shadow he's castin'' is an indigo blue
Is there anything left for this cowboy to do
The end of a time is near.
